The program

How this actually works on a campus.

The operational answers: process, cost, staff time, what you receive, and how the credentialing works. Written for the person who has to implement it and defend the decision internally.

The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) is a leadership honor society with over 2 million members. Students are nominated by their campus, complete a structured leadership curriculum, and are inducted on completion. The chapter itself is student-led: a student executive board runs it alongside a faculty or staff advisor, and the NSLS supplies the programming, the platform, the training, and ongoing support.

For an administrator, that structure is the point. It produces engagement and documented outcomes without requiring a new staff line, which is the constraint most campuses are actually working under.

The member journey

Five steps to induction

The steps take around ten hours to complete in total, and members typically finish in one semester. Induction itself is the fifth and final step.

01
Orientation
Members start by learning how the program works and what completing it requires. It sets the expectation that this is a curriculum, not a membership card.
02
Leadership Training Day
A two-hour interactive session on goal-setting and core leadership skills, the foundation members build on through the rest of the program.
03
Three Speaker Broadcasts
Live and recorded sessions with nationally recognized speakers. Six are delivered each year, and members attend three.
04
Three Success Networking Team meetings
Small peer groups that set goals, hold each other accountable, and reflect on progress. This is where most of the durable-skill development actually happens.
05
Induction
The culmination of the member journey, induction usually takes place in a ceremony recognizing members who completed every step.

From advisors

What it changes for staff

“From a leadership programming perspective, we're able to engage a lot more students than what we are able to with our current staffing. And we're able to engage students that we don't normally see.”

Evelyn Ortega, NSLS Advisor, City College of New York

“The NSLS provided me with an opportunity to interact with students that I hadn't seen before. Instead of me as an administrator saying 'you should care about this,' it was the students who came back and said, 'we really want this.'”

Joshua Nelson, NSLS Advisor & Director of Student Affairs, Hartwick College

Both quotes appear on the NSLS program overview.
