Career readiness

Also called: Career readiness skills · Career preparedness · Career readiness definition

Career readiness is the set of competencies that let a graduate perform in a workplace and manage a career, plus the ability to demonstrate them to an employer.

The half of the definition that gets dropped

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), whose framework is the most widely used in US higher education, frames career readiness as a foundation of core competencies preparing college-educated people both for workplace success and for managing a career over the long term.

The second half does most of the work and is usually omitted. Career readiness is not only about the first job; it includes the durable capacity to reassess, retrain and move. A definition limited to placement rates always undercounts it, and a program designed against placement alone stops developing students the moment they are hired.

Why the term is contested

Three constituencies measure it against three different kinds of evidence, and all three are answering honestly. Institutions measure provision: courses offered, advising delivered, internships available. Employers measure demonstrated proficiency in an interview and a first ninety days. Students measure felt confidence.

The result is incompatible numbers from the same graduating class. In our State of Higher Ed 2026 research, 83.8% of undergraduates said their education prepared them for the workforce, while 37% of recruiters agreed that graduates are prepared. Some of that 47-point gap is a skills gap and some of it is three groups using one word for three different measurements.

Four terms that are not synonyms

The substitution is routine in strategic plans and accreditation self-studies, and it costs real clarity. The test is to ask what changes when the number changes:

  • Career readiness changes when the person develops. A property of the person, assessed against a framework.
  • Employability changes when the labour market moves. A property of the person relative to the market.
  • Work readiness changes when a specific job is in view: reliability, workplace norms, task execution. Narrower and more immediate, and a term of art in career and technical education rather than higher-ed assessment.
  • Career preparation changes when the institution spends. It is an input, and reporting it as career readiness is the most common error in this area.

If your metric moves for the wrong reason, you have the wrong term.

Frameworks: pick one as the system of record

NACE publishes eight career readiness competencies with definitions and a companion assessment tool, and revises the set periodically. Take the current names and wording from NACE directly rather than from a secondary source. The US Department of Education’s Employability Skills Framework takes a workforce-development view, organising skills into applied knowledge, effective relationships and workplace skills. The CAS Learning and Development Outcomes organise student learning into six domains and are the framework written as an assessment obligation, which makes them the one that speaks a program reviewer’s language.

Match the framework to the audience that will read the result, record which edition you assessed against, and let one framework own the definitions, the rubric and the reported number. Two systems of record means no system of record.
